Documents

All visitors to Zanzibar must hold passports that are valid for at least six months beyond the proposed date of entry to the country. Police authorities and immigration offices require to hold a return ticket to Italy (with any airline company) or an international connection ticket to another State (with any airline or naval company).

Currency

Official currency is the Tanzanian shilling.
Banks are usually open Monday to Friday from 08:30am until 12:30pm and Saturady from 08:30am until 11:30am.
Payments with credit card are usually accepted, but often it is required to pay in dollars.

Language

The official language is Swahili and English.

Vaccination and Health precautions

The local Health sistem is very deficient in terms of equipments, staff and the availability of specific drugs. The blood transfusions are not safe.
Malaria is endemic and there are other diseases like: cholera, typhoid, paratyphoid, viral hepatitis A, B, C, tetanus, bilharzia.
Before the travel, it is advisable to enter an Health assurance to cover medical expenses and also the eventual air ambulance repatriation or the transfer to another country.

Pets

Travelling with dogs and cats requires to take a pet good health certificate and they must have had rabies vaccination.

Telephone

To phone Italy from abroad the country code is 0039 + city code + phone number; to phone Tanzania from abroad, the country code is 00 + 255 (Zanzibar code) + phone number.
To make international calls from Zanzibar with a mobile phone, dial 000 before the international code (example, to call Italy 00039).
Public telephons:
There is a good GSM local network. At the Old Post Office, in Kenyatta Road at Stone Town, it is possible to buy phone cards for international calls (minimum 2000 clicks for the intercontinental calls).

Electronic equipments

Electricity is 220- 240 V AC, 50 Hz and the triple plugs are the most common. We advise to bring with you an adapter.
