In 2005, a significant issue concerns the development of direct sales (direct agents and new telematic sales channels, the website www.meridiana.it, the website dedicated to travel agents and the Call Centre 892 928), which reached 40% of total sales. In 2005 Meridiana set a new record by carrying over 4 million passengers.
In June 2006, Meridiana launched Wokita.com, the Company's on line tour operator. Wokita's ambition is to offer tourist booking services (hotels, car rentals, flights, holiday deals) on all the destinations served by Meridiana.
In September 2006 Meridiana acquired 15% of the shares of ADF, the handling company of Florence Airport.
In December 2006 Meridiana acquired the majority package of the airline company Eurofly, with a 29,95% share. During the year further important investments are made aiming to develop Meridiana, which also closed 2006 with the historical record of 4,6 million passengers carried with an approximate 15% increase compared to 2005.
In May 2007 Meridiana’s website was visited by a total of 1.215,000 unique visitors (source Nielsen NetRating) and thus became the first website for air transport in Italy. The website www.meridiana.com, the B2B portal WTS – Web Trade System and the Call Centre 829.928 generated a total share of over 55% of sales proceeds.
Throughout 2007, Meridiana pursued a precise strategy for the development of the international network by starting up several connections from Verona and Florence toward Eastern Europe and reaching a code-share agreement with its partner Eurofly, thus permitting a wider choice for its clients by including the renowned islands of Ibiza, Mykonos and Crete in its network.
Moreover, starting on the 16th of November 2007 Meridiana made its entry in long-haul flights by flying to New York with a twice-weekly schedule operated by Eurofly. This date is a milestone for Meridiana which this year celebrated its 44th year of activity.
