Fly to Santorini from:
Santorini is a Greek island in the Cycladic Archipelago. It has a population of about 10,000 and, with Therasia and Kameni, is all that remains of a vast volcanic crater. Santorini’s capital, Thira, is in a spectacular location 200 meters above sea level on the edge of the caldera, offering panoramic views.
The city features an archaeological museum with artefacts from ancient settlements, and the Megara Museum.
The Santorini sunsets are among the most beautiful in the world and can be enjoyed both from the terraces of the town of Fira and from Mount Profitis, from where you can watch the “green ray,” the last ray of the sun before it disappears below the horizon. Today, couples frequently choose to get married here at sunset in one of the many tiny churches.
What to see:
Nea Kameni Volcano, the Prehistoric and Archeological Museum, the archeological excavations at Akrotiri (excavations from the 1960s, which unearthed an urban settlement from 1500 B.C. with beautifully frescoed houses near the village of Akrotiri).
Things to do:
In the afternoon there is plenty to do. There are numerous spots by the sea, including snack bars, beach chalets and pubs. But in the evening the fun really gets going thanks to the many nightclubs featuring live music. At dawn, after the bars and clubs close, everyone heads for the beach for music and fun by the light of bonfires.
