Pantelleria is the largest island of Sicily's satellites and its city with a population of about 8 thousand people belongs to the Trapani Province. Located in a central position in the Mediterranean Sea, Pantelleria is 85 Km from the Sicilian coast and 70 Km from the African coasts. The volcanic Island is characterised by the great variety of its landscape and the numerous historical evidences of different cultures such as the Spanish-Iberian or the Arab and Normans ones.
The Giardini Panteschi (Panteschi Gardens, cylindrical buildings to protect flowers from the winds) and the Dammusi (typical volcanic rocks houses with white covers and arch entrances) are examples of the human ability to adapt themselves to the climatic conditions and particularly to the strong winds that, since they are present all year round, have conferred to Pantelleria the nickname of Wind Island.
Thanks to the considerable extension of the Island, about 83 square kilometres, it's possible to go on a number of natural itineraries in addition, of course, to the wonderful beaches.
The Montagna Grande Park and Venere's Lake (authentic natural pool characterised by volcanic water steams) are examples of itineraries that can be visited on foot or by public transport.
The economy of Pantelleria is based on the growing of grapes with the established production of quality wines such as Passito, Moscato and the famous sweet Zibibbo. Cheeses, Oils and Capers have also reached excellent levels of quality and importance.
