Verona (about 263,541 inhabitants) is the administrative centre of the homonymous province; every year, due to its artistic wealth and to the variety of annual shows, like the lyrical season held at the Arena, it is visited by thousands of tourists, many of them foreign.
Because of its artistic and archaeological wealth, Verona is considered one of the top Italian art cities.
The most famous monument, which has become the city symbol, is the "Arena", the third largest Roman amphitheatre after the Coliseum and the Capuan Amphitheatre, but among them it is actually the best preserved, in fact nowadays is still used to hold concerts.
The Arena hosts several international events and shows; the most renowned event is the Arena Lyric Festival, which is held every summer, since 1913, when the festival was inaugurated with “Aida” by Giuseppe Verdi, to celebrate the centennial year since the artist's birth, drawing people from all over the world.
The "San Zeno" Basilica, of medieval period, is perhaps northern Italy's finest Romanesque church. It is linked to the homonymous abbey, of which there are some towers and some cloisters left. Thanks to William Shakespeare, Verona is nowadays one of the most renowned and loved city in the world. He never visited Verona, but he learnt of it through some written works which inspired him to create one of his own most famous works "Romeo and Juliet”.
