Chisinau is the Moldavian capital as well as its most populated city (752,900 inhabitants). Located in the centre of the historic region of Bessarabia, Chisinau rises along the banks of the “Byk” river, it is considered to be one of the cities in Europe with the most open spaces, parks and gardens.
The origins of its name are uncertain, a possible etymology is "kesene", a Cumaean word which means “crypt”. When visiting Chisinau you can’t miss a trip to the imposing statue of “Stefan cel Mare” located in the entrance of the homonymous park.
This place represents the heart of the city centre as well as the main usual meeting point for local people.
Until 1991, the statue of Lenin dominated the area, where nowadays there is the statue of “Prince and Saint Stefan cel Mare” also known as the hero of the struggle for freedom against the ottoman invasion. The homonymous park, which spreads behind the monument, is without doubt the most preserved and beautiful of the city.
In the park you will find a beautiful fountain (closed in winter) as well as several statues of Rumanian and Russian writers and poets. Leaving the park, along the path with the statues, crossing the “Bulevard Stefan cel Mare”, you reach the Opera and Ballet Theatre. The Square in front of it has been recently rebuilt and include two flood lit “dancing” fountains which creates an evocative image at night.
Among with the most important buildings, it’s worth mentioning the Presidential Palace, locally also known as the “Crystal Palace”. The orthodox Cathedral of “the birth of our Lord”, in classical Russian style, consists of a central part and a tower with a separate bell tower; it was originally a work by the architect Abraam Melnicov who planned and ended it in 1836.
The Cathedral is surrounded by a park full of flowers where, in the week ends and during holidays, a colourful handicraft market is held.
On the side of the park, along the Banulescu-Bodoni street, you will find the main open-air flower market, open 24 hours a day.
