ALISARDA, a company with entirely private capital, was established in March 29th 1963 on the initiative of HH Prince Aga Khan with the objective of favouring the development of the tourist industry in the Emerald Coast (Costa Smeralda), which is located in the north-eastern coast of Sardinia, and until that time, only accessible by sea.
In 1978 Alisarda was assigned the concession of the Cagliari-Milan-Cagliari route; the organizational and operative capabilities of the company had practically doubled thanks also to the expansion of the fleet with two DC9-32. Services were extended also to Europe with flights from and to Sardinia from Geneva, Zurich, Paris, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf.
On May 3rd 1991 in an Extraordinary Shareholders Meeting, in consideration of the new company profile that saw the company expanding its operations to Europe, the name of the company was change to Meridiana S.p.A.
In 1993, with the arrival of the eighth MD-82, Meridiana inaugurated two new service routes from and to Sardinia, the Cagliari-Florence and the Cagliari-Paris, opening also its second daily flight between Florence and Paris, its fifth daily flight between Verona and Rome, and its fourth daily flight between Milan-Malpensa and Rome. The year it celebrated its 33 years of foundation Meridiana closed.
The first nine months of operation in the year 2001 were positive; then the company suffered the aftermath of the dramatic events of September 11 and the incident at the Linate airport in Milan. As a consequence of the September 11 events air transportation worldwide decreased with peaks of up to 25%. In 2001 Meridiana carried 3.269.664 passengers.
In 2005, a significant issue concerns the development of direct sales (direct agents and new telematic sales channels, the website www.meridiana.it, the website dedicated to travel agents and the Call Centre 892 928), which reached 40% of total sales. In 2005 Meridiana set a new record by carrying over 4 million passengers.
Eurofly was created seventeen years ago. Since 1989 it has come a long way, making many changes in its management and its fleet, which is on average less than 4 years old, continually searching for ways to better satisfy its customers', passengers', tour operators' and travel agencies' needs.
Dicember 2000: Eurofly becomes the Alitalia Group's official charter company.
May 2001: Eurofly begins renovating its fleet introducing 5 new 320 Airbus for its medium haul network.
2006: Following the experience and success gained previous year with Bologna, Naples and Palermo flights to New York, Eurofly introduces direct flights from Rome to New York and doubles the activity period of all flights to the Big Apple from three to six months, namely from May to November 2006.
At the end of February 2010, a new Company was founded: Meridiana fly, the second carrier in Italy.
Built with the most recent and tested technologies with attention paid also to future environmental and ecological requirements.
The 737 - a short-to-medium-range airplane.
